The Crafts Council of India (CCI) invites nominations to its Kamala Awards 2023. The awards conferred annually were instituted in the year 2000 in memory of our Patron Founder Smt. Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay to recognize and honour outstanding merit in the field of traditional Indian handcrafts.
There are 5 categories of Awards :-
- Kamala Award for Excellence in Crafts recognizes the high level of proficiency and skill achieved by a craftsperson as exhibited in the body of his/her work done over the years. The award carries a cash prize of Rs.20,000/-, a medal, a certificate, citation and a shawl.
- Kamala Award for Contribution to Craftshonours a senior artisan for his/ her contribution to the development of his/ her traditional craft and the training of younger people in the field. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 20,000/-, a medal, a certificate, citation and a shawl.
- Shanta Prasad Award for Excellence in Weavinghonours an artisan for proficiency in traditional handloom weaving. The award instituted in memory of late Smt. Shanta Prasad, senior member of CCI by her family carries a cash prize of Rs.20,000/-, a medal, a certificate, citation and a shawl.
- Young Artisan Award instituted by the Kaivalam Foundation honours an artisan who must be below 30 years of age and shows exceptional skill and craftsmanship. The award carries a cash prize of Rs.20,000/-, a medal, a certificate, citation and a shawl.
- Kamala Award for Revival of Languishing Crafts instituted by Smt. Visalakshi Ramaswamy recognizes and honours an artisan for his/ her effort to revive a languishing craft. The award carries a cash prize of Rs.20,000/-, a medal, a certificate, citation and a shawl.
KAMALA AWARDS – CATEGORIES CRITERIA
Every Nomination should be enclosed with:-
- Photograph of the Candidate
- Bio-data of the Candidate
- Profile of the Candidate prepared by the Council / NGO
- Photographs of their Craft to be sent along with the bio-data
- Original Photographs should be sent.
Categories of Awards and the Criteria governing them are:
- Kamala Award for Excellence in Craftsmanship
Given to a craftsperson for exceptional skill in the body of work.
Criteria –
- Exceptional Quality of work
- Quality of finish
- The work exhibited in the photographs should have been done recently
- Kamala Award for Contribution to the Craft
Given to a craftsperson who has substantially contributed to the development
of his / her craft and community.
Criteria –
- Above 45 years of age
- Teaching & spreading knowledge of the craft
- Effort to revive the craft
- Innovation, Documentation
- Shanta Prasad Award for Excellence in Weaving
Given to a weaver for Excellence in Weaving Skills.
Criteria –
- Exceptional Quality of work
- Quality of finish
- Young Artisan Award
Given to a young craftsperson for Exceptional skill and Craftsmanship.
Criteria –
- 30 years of age and below
- Exceptional Quality of work
- Experience of at least 5 years under a master craftsperson
- Kamala Award for Revival of Languishing Crafts
Given to a craftsperson for Reviving a Languishing craft.
Criteria —
- Quality of work
- Quality of finish
- Efforts to revive the craft
